Shiplake College is a thriving boarding and day school for boys aged 11‑18 and girls aged 16‑18. Overlooking the Thames, a short distance upstream of the famous Henley Royal Regatta stretch, students enjoy an inspirational 45 acre site. The stunning grounds are equipped with fantastic modern facilities, including a contemporary thinking space, multi‑purpose lecture theatre and the school's very own boat house.
Shiplake provides a friendly, supportive environment to bring out the best in each and every pupil. Renowned for outstanding pastoral care and personal development, the college welcomes pupils with a variety of skills and talents. Shiplake's education is tailored to the individual through engaging, inspirational teaching, delivered in small classes where teachers understand each pupil's most effective learning methods. With a greater recent focus on academic rigour, it is no surprise that the college continue to achieve a year‑on‑year improvement in examination results.
In August, Shiplake leavers achieved a record number of A*s and As at A level, helping to secure places at a variety of leading institutions, including Oxbridge, Russell Group and Ivy League universities. In addition to a strong academic foundation, the college offers excellent co‑curricular opportunities. Two afternoons per week are reserved for an array of clubs and activities, including a comprehensive outdoor education programme. Academic lessons previously held on Saturdays have recently moved to within a five day working week. Sports training and fixtures take place on Saturday mornings, allowing pupils to enjoy additional family time and a break from academic lessons. For boarders, there is a busy programme of evening and weekend activities.
A full ISI inspection in 2015 judged Shiplake as 'excellent' – the highest accolade – across all nine
inspection categories. Commendation of this magnitude is rare in education, placing Shiplake amongst a select group of independent schools in the country.
The college offers a range of funded places, including means‑tested bursaries and academic, music, art and sport scholarships. A wide‑ranging school bus network is in operation, including a new route to and from West London, ideal for weekly boarders. Prospective families are encouraged to arrange an individual visit or attend an upcoming open morning.
